4 to face trial for cop bashing

Four youths from the Gordon area in Port Moresby will appear at the Waigani National Court for mention on February 8 next year after they were committed by the District Court today.

The youths are facing allegations of unlawfully attempting to kill a police officer based at the Gordon Police Barracks.

Miro Michael, Donald Nambia, Norris Saun and Valentine Michael were committed by the Waigani District Court to stand trial after the magistrate made a ruling on section 94(b)(1) of the District Court Act.

It is alleged that the four defendants on August 23, 2014 at the Gordon Police Barracks unlawfully attempted to kill another person.

The victim was a serving member of the Police Force living at the barracks.

It is alleged the four used a baseball bat, shock absorber springs, sticks and stones to bash the victim who is now disabled as a result of the assault.

Medical reports from doctors also said he is now disabled as a result of the assault.

 The court made a ruling to have the matter committed to the National Court for the defendants to stand trial after their lawyer failed to make numerous attendances in court for the scheduled hearings.

The court also made its ruling today after their lawyer failed to file and serve submissions.

It made a ruling based on evidence provided from 14 witnesses as well as the records of interview of those witnesses.
