Police apprehend another suspect in late Dr Rongap Snr’s case

One more suspect has been apprehended by detectives for the murder of Doctor Alphonse Rongap Snr.

The suspect from Pindiu, Morobe Province, lives at Backroad Malahang. He was surrounded by police at a location at Tari Block at the back of Awagasi, Kamkumung.

Lae metropolitan superintendent Anthony Wagambie Jnr says he was identified by witnesses who believed he was part of the gang that attacked Dr Rongap Snr last Saturday.

They alleged that he had fled his area at backroad and was on the run when informants alerted police, who then moved quickly to the area to apprehend him.

Wagambie Jnr adds that he had escaped from police cell after he was brought down from Buimo to have his warrant renewed after it had expired. At that time he was remanded for armed robbery and was awaiting trial.

"He has previous files and those will be dealt with now that he is back in custody," Wagambie Jnr says.

"I appeal again to the community to keep assisting police to get information on the other suspects who are still at large.”

Three suspects are now in police custody. The first was apprehended the same night the incident took place, the second surrendered yesterday, where he was picked up by Wagambie Jnr at Sipaia, and the third was apprehended today.

Police are still in pursuit of the other known suspects.
