Peaceful Alotau on lockdown

The peaceful town of Alotau, in Milne Bay Province, is currently on lockdown as police are trying to address a potential hostage situation.

Milne Bay police commander, Joseph Morehari, confirmed with Loop PNG over the phone that there are hostages being held in the Airlines PNG office.

However, he would not reveal the number of hostage-takers or their victims. He reassured the public that they are now on the scene and are dealing with the situation.

The Loop newsroom received information from residents on the ground that the town has come to a standstill as the public awaits the outcome of the hostage situation.

“The two banks are closed, the Government office is closed as well as the main shopping centre,” Loop PNG was told.

“Because the Airlines office has only one entrance, armed police and security guards are manning the entryway outside.”

Residents have reported that they heard police using a loudhailer to negotiate with the hostage-takers.

“It happened at 9.45am. We are just waiting to see what will happen next.”
