Upgraded resource centre for Alotau

Alotau Inclusive Education Resource Centre in Milne Bay Province received the handover of a newly renovated and extended classroom, thanks to BSP Branch staff in Alotau.

The renovated classroom is part of BSP Alotau’s 2019 Community Project that was completed and handed over last week.

The building now provides safe and spacious learning environment for the Centre’s students, especially those with disabilities.

Director of Inclusive Education Resource Centre, Sr. Anecita Kabunbun, thanked BSP for the much needed renovation and facelift of the facility.

Sr. Kabunbun said: “The extended building brings hope to many of the parents who entrust the care of their children with us. Many of our students have disabilities and special needs and this building provides a safe place for our special children to learn.

“The teachers will now also have privacy with their students as previous classes were attended in an open building where there was lot of noise and disturbances.”

The old building that was partially completed, received general maintenance work done to the interior and exterior of the building, new walls and a fresh coat of paint.

The task was carried out by BSP staff, who volunteered their time over the weekends to assist the contractor to complete their community project.

BSP Alotau branch manager, Martin Gilo, said: “The community project that we do is part of our staff and branch’s contribution to the community in which we work in.

“We value the work that Alotau Inclusive Education Resource Centre does in the province and each staff member is pleased to contribute to the well-being of the community, through our volunteer work and community project.”

The project was delivered at the cost of K25,000, plus a donation of resource and reading books worth K1,500.

This year BSP will be revisiting 45 of its longstanding community projects in which most are dedicated to improving the facilities for children, people with Disabilities and communities.
