St Joseph’s outperform in spelling bee comp

St Joseph’s Catholic College stamped their mark in the Junior and Intermediate categories of the Em Stret Spelling Bee Competition.

The competition saw more than 100 students from 10 primary schools in NCD take part.

Students in the upper primary or senior level competed today with the 1st round proving tougher than expected.

From the 8 students who took the stage, Coronation Primary School, Salvation Army and Port Moresby International School survived the first surge of elimination.

Spellers from these three schools battled on until POMIS bagged the first of 4 rounds.

Teachers said this competition has not only enabled students to enhance their spelling skills, but also helped broaden teachers’ ideas of innovative classroom activities.

Mrs Epenesa Forova, a teacher at Coronation Primary School, said her and her colleagues plan to run similar competitions in their schools.

If anything was learnt from this competition, it was student’s inability to differentiate homophones or words with similar pronunciation (eg. New/knew) but have different meanings.

Mrs Forova added, collective effort both from students and teachers is needed to improve in this area.

The competition started on Tuesday and ended today with the top 3 performing schools awarded trophies while outstanding students received certificates.
