Ramu NiCo, PNG’s only nickel-cobalt miner, was overall champion of the 2017, PNG Extractive Industries, Emergency Response Challenge, held in Madang recently.
The company overcame eight strong teams from various mining and petroleum companies around the country to take out the overall title.
Ok Tedi Mining, Porgera Joint Venture, Harmony Gold, Simberi, Oil Search, Ramu Nickel and Newcrest Lihir participated.
They competed in areas of fire-fighting, rope rescue, multi-casualty, hazmat, endurance and confined space search and rescue.
PNG Chamber of Mines and Petroleum President, Gerea Aopi said the challenge exposes everyone to new methods and equipment to improve skills and address knowledge gaps on operating in safe and secure work environments in respective companies.
Aopi challenged them to implement what they have learnt, in their respective place of work.
Meantime, Harmony Gold won the Fire Fighting event, Newcrest Lihir’s male team, won the Endurance challenge, Ok Tedi won in both the Rope and Vertical Rescue, and Hazmat events, Newcrest Lihir’s women team, took out the Multi Casualty challenge, while Ramu NiCo’s Basamuk team succeeded in the Theory exercise.
