The U.S. Embassy has announced that Dr. Mathias Bauri, the only epidemiologist for the National Department of Health of Papua New Guinea, flew out of Port Moresby last week to participate in a U.S. government program.
Dr. Bauri will take part in the International Visitors Leadership Program on Infectious Diseases.
He is an emerging young leader in the field of epidemiology, and the experience he will gain will help him improve the country’s capacity to respond to infectious diseases. His three week program in the United States will take place from June 18 – July 6, in Washington, Atlanta, San Francisco, Sacramento, Reno and Miami.
Dr Bauri, 36, provides leadership in research, disease surveillance and emergency and outbreak responses for the National Department of Health in Papua New Guinea.
He also serves as a faculty member in the Field Epidemiology Training Program in PNG, training field epidemiologists and has worked closely with the U.S. Embassy health team from the Center for Disease Control.
Dr Bauri is directly responsible for providing technical advice to the Government on infectious diseases of global health concern and the IVLP program will enhance his knowledge in this area and place him in a better position to address issues efficiently and with confidence.
