Judiciary to upgrade Bereina police station

The colonial-built Bereina police station will be upgraded from dismantled building materials from the Waigani National Court house.

22 containers containing building materials worth K3 million have been moved from Waigani to Bereina in Central Province.

Initially the materials were meant for the upgrading of the Bereina court house.

Chief Justice Sir Salamo Injia says: “What we’ve done is we’ve decided to help the police upgrade the police station first using some of that material because we’re talking about something like K3 million worth materials, a lot of which are new from the dismantled buildings from this place.

“We’ve upgraded the police stations, new police cells, and I’m told that the old police station, they’ve pulled it down and they want to rebuild it again so there’s work underway.

“We will complete the police station first,” he said.

Last year the Chief Justice travelled to Bereina station where he inspected the rundown colonial built police station.

The holding cell was not fit for human occupation, with no running water or electricity.

With regard to the court facility at Bereina, Sir Salamo said the new site for the construction has been cleared.

“For the construction of the new building, design works have been done, concepts have been developed and we’re going to move in after the police stations have been completed.

“We will be running the tender for that construction.

“We’ve got the funds sitting for that to be completed but since we came back we’ve decided to help the police first,” Sir Salamo said.

“Police seem to have no funds so we’ve decided to help them first.

“We operate as a team remember, in a collaborative effort when it comes to providing legal and judicial services so yeah, work is in progress,” he added.
