Institution aims to stop ‘brain drain’

The Manus Technical Centre is taking the lead in stopping ‘brain drain’ in the Province.

The institution is working towards upgrading its diploma courses to National Certificate or NC qualification level by next month.

Teacher Niandros Misina said the Manus Technical College is the only vocational institution in the province offering skills training in tourism and hospitality, carpentry, construction, mechanic and arts and crafts for grades 10 and 12 school leavers.

She said the centre is working towards offering these courses at National Certificate level so that students do not have to travel to other centres to attain NC qualification.

For Manus Province, tourism industry is a potential economic player; therefore, offering NC certificates in tourism and hospitality is a step in the right direction.

This will also see students retained in the province to develop the tourism industry and create more jobs so to stop the trend of brain drain, where the province’s human resource live and work in other provinces.

Creating more local jobs in the province will ensure locals invest back into their province and in the process, allow for progress and development.
