Drink driving, speeding cause of road accidents in Gulf

Increased road accidents along the Kerema Malalaua road has been blamed on drunk driving and over speeding.

The concern raised this week by Senior Sergeant Thomas Akasiki of Kerema Police Station comes as a result of more than 50 cases of road accidents reported so far a year after the Kerema-Malalaua road was opened last year.

He described the road having many corners and drivers ignoring the road signs and driving carelessly without consideration for the passengers they carry.

Akasiki also said despite efforts by the police and traffic officers in the province to curb the issue, there are still a number of cases reported each month.

“Most drivers are breaking traffic rules when they consume alcohol and drive and this has resulted in a lot of nasty accidents already.”

He called for all stakeholders concerned to work together and curb down on unregistered vehicle and vehicles not roadworthy as well using the road.

He highlighted that road safety awareness for drivers is also very important and also awareness for the public living along the roadside too to avoid putting themselves at harms way.
