Culture Week for city kids

A Culture Week will be hosted in September during the Independence Day celebrations for students in the National Capital District.

The weeklong educational event, based on Papua New Guinea’s unique cultures, will be hosted at the Port Moresby Nature Park.

PNG is one of the most culturally diverse countries in the world with 852 known languages and tribes in the country.

Nature Park education program coordinator Ishimu Bebe told Loop PNG that the cultural program highlights how PNG’s unique cultures play a very important role in the different cultural societies.

Bebe said they will also educate the students on the importance of preserving some of PNG’s traditional attire and how that knowledge is passed down from generations.

“It’s very vital that the students within the city know some of these important information about traditional and local knowledge.

“This is because they don’t have this opportunity to sit with the elders of their village who can educate them on their cultures and traditions.

“So as part of our mission here, we try to educate them on the aspect of our traditions and the importance of our PNG culture,” Bebe explained.

Other educational week programs planned for this year include World Wildlife Week and Environmental Week.
