Boroko market gives preferences to women

First preferences have been given to mothers to sell their produce at the new Boroko market.

The market saw its first lot vendors move in to claim their space to sell their produce.

Vendors pushed and fought against each other at the market entrances to get inside the market vicinity to take ownership of a spot.

Police and security could not do much to control the number of people pushing to get in to find a spot, and struggled with the crowd to force them to move back to the car park area, and organize themselves.

NCD Market Manager, Charlie Pengi said the intension for the new market to re-settle the market vendors from Gordons to Boroko market as Gordons market will be going under reconstruction.

Pengi said space have been reserved for Central people moving in from Gordons market as well as the Boroko venders.

“The first 100 mothers from the Boroko area, as well as over 500 spaces for mothers from Gordons market, including Central, were brought in to secure a spot each. “

He said however that due to this morning’s commotion, the market will remain closed for now until a proper listing is made for the mothers to secure a space to sell their produce.

He adds that those who are already inside and have secured a spot will have their names put on record, whilst those outside will have to organize and coordinate themselves with their team leaders first enter the market.

“Most of the people who are currently outside the markets vicinity are just opportunist claiming to be genuine vendors from either Gordons or Boroko when they are not and we are doing everything we can to stop this from happening by holding back the entry to strictly mothers from Gordons and Boroko.”

“We haven’t opened the market yet because that and once we find a way of getting the genuine vendors in to the market then we’ll open the market.”
