68yo’s fight reaps results

A six-year fight to have his area recognised by the government as a protected area has finally come to fruition.

Thanks to local land owner Joseph Gavara’s efforts, the Inaina Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Ward 16, Kairuku Hiri District of Central Province, is now a gazetted protected area.

This makes it the 6th Protected Area in Central Province and the 58th for the country.

This was revealed by Conservation and Environment Protection Authority (CEPA) officer Frederick Ohama during the launching at the project site over the weekend.

Over 300 people who gathered to witness the launching included CEPA officers, Environment NGO Partners with Melanesians, and Kairuku-Hiri LLG ward 16 councillor Kevin Frank.

68-year-old Gavara is now at peace, knowing that his future generation will not only hear stories about the beautifully preserved Wildlife Area but will be able to see and reap the fruits of his hard work.
