Year of tragedy and triumph

ExxonMobil PNG Managing Director, Andrew Barry, has described 2018 as a year of tragedy and triumph.

Speaking at the recent ExxonMobil PNG’s Stakeholder Thank you event, Barry said the 2018 February earthquake was the worst disaster he had seen.

Barry said while the PNG LNG project was affected by the earthquake, there were no major injuries. However, many surrounding communities were affected.

He said without the support of partners they would not have been able to attend to them; a role that is still continuing to this day.

“It (earthquake) had significant impact on our operations but we were lucky to come out without any serious injuries.  But the impact it had on the community around us was profound, and I can’t thank enough the partners we had during that time, where we could, in helping the community recover,” said Barry.

Many stakeholder partners who attended thanked ExxonMobil for their support to the community.

Kutubu LLG Council Member, Anne Hewago, thanked ExxonMobil for their support to women.

“I really want to thank ExxonMobil for recognising what’s important in this nation, yet so undermined, the potential that is in women and girls,” she said.

Tribal Foundation, which runs the Senisim Pasin campaign with the backing of ExxonMobil PNG, were also thankful.

“Thank you Andrew Barry and everyone at Exxon for your partnership. With your support Tribal is building people to build PNG,” said Yanamlyn Yana.
