Wamaiyen market training

In preparing to manage its marketplace at Wamaiyen along the Sepik Highway, three representatives from the Yangoru-Saussia District underwent training supported by the UN Women.

The Minister for International Trade and Investment & Yangoru-Saussia MP, Richard Maru thanked UN Women for starting the training for the Wamaiyen Market to attend the UN Women Markets Analysis Workshop.

The representatives namely David Wurasua, Wilma Wama, and Jemimah Lihomie flew to Alotau over the weekend to attend the two-day workshop that commenced on Monday 29 April and concluded yesterday, Tuesday 30 April.

The workshop provided an opportunity for the participants to learn from each other's experiences in supporting local markets and women entrepreneurs, allow them to identify opportunities for growth and development within their districts, and also visit the Alotau Market to allow them to gain firsthand insights into successful market practices and women-led businesses

Minister Maru said, “We realize that a lot of training is needed, not only for the building of the market and its management when completed, but also financial literacy training and other training like cooking, sewing, and other skills that will be required for all our mothers and our people to be ready for the first 24-hour market of Papua New Guinea at Wamaiyen along the Sepik Highway.”

Minister Maru added: “We are so grateful that we chose to partner with the UN Women who have wasted no time in sending the first three representatives from our district to attend the workshop in Alotau. This is the start of training of our people in the Yangoru-Saussia District to prepare them for the Wamaiyen Market.”
