Monadelphous celebrates safety journey

Monadelphous, a company contracted to the Lihir gold operation, has safely achieved and celebrated 100,000 injury-free man hours towards the end of 2018.

This was part of its safety journey since its operation started in April 2017.

Newcrest Mining Ltd says Monadelphous has been very active across Lihir’s process plant, safely repairing and replacing rusty and damaged steelwork, platforms and supports, as part of the wider Newcrest priority to maintain a safer and more reliable working environment.

“Its safety milestone in Lihir is impressive because the Monadelphous team works in some of the challenging areas within the process plant, undertaking high risk tasks such as working at heights, hot work and crane lifts on a daily basis.”

Monadelphous site manager, Mal Campbell, explains that the team had set goals in 2017 and was determined to achieve them in order to align with Newcrest’s pillars of safety and sustainability and operating performance.

“After 18 months, the crew achieved well in safety, quality and productivity. I’m proud of the crew,” said Campbell.

Monadelphous has also built a loyal and capable team with most employees having been in Lihir since the start of their contract. The employees have also been involved in several major shutdowns. They are efficiently and safely organised to ensure everyone goes home happy and safely every day.

“We achieved our injury-free record by leading the way in safety, planning, quality, being responsible, efficiency and team work. We strive to achieve this by ensuring that we live and work by our values and Newcrest pillars and values,” said Monadelphous supervisor, Nicky Collins.

The team celebrated their achievement with a BBQ lunch at their workshop. Newcrest Safety Advisor, Paul Julius, congratulated the team on their achievement and reinforced the importance of setting and maintaining high safety standards at their workplace, communities and homes.
