Maru: PNG fisheries has potential

Minister for Planning and Monitoring Richard Maru says Papua New Guinea’s fisheries industry has the potential to attract major players in the Global fisheries market.

The minister highlighted the need for the sector to be exposed to these players especially countries under the European Union.

Maru said PNG fisheries sector is one of the core sectors that performs well in exporting – however it has only been exporting to a few countries including the Philippines.

He reiterated that there is a large scale of production, which can be distributed to other global markets with the appropriate approach towards the sector.

Maru noted that PNG and the European Union have been in partnership for a long time, and the recent 40th anniversary marks this important relationship; thus he said, Papua New Guinea could look into striking up a partnership with some of these countries under the EU to export this product.

The Minister has also noted that most of the countries that the fisheries products are being exported to are not even partnering countries in terms of official partnership – however due to business and investment this countries are benefiting from this prime export.
