LOs want PM to deliver on promise

Hides landowners have called on Prime Minister Peter O’Neill to honour his commitment to transfer the 4.2 percent indirect interest in the PNG LNG Project to them.

During the 2017 National Election campaign trail, O’Neill announced in Tari that the Government will transfer the 25 percent of Kroton shares (4.2 percent), worth K3.5 billion, to landowners from Hela, Southern Highlands, Western, Gulf and Central provinces.

At the time, O’Neill said this was in line with the spirit of transferring 17.4 percent of Bougainville Copper Limited shares to the people of Bougainville and the 33 percent ownership of Ok Tedi to the Western Province mine affected landowners.

Early this week, landowners said O’Neill must not shy away from his public announcement in Tari.

“Confirm it by writing, also attach an NEC decision confirming that announcement and give it to us. Then we will know the government is responsible and will honour what they have said,” said Dickson Ango, Hides PDL 1 representative.

“Otherwise it’s just another government propaganda to entice us to vote for your candidates. So we are asking the Prime Minister to give us a confirmation letter on that one.”
