NCD police reservists to be recalled for APEC

Security in Port Moresby will be heightened with the launch of a special operation which will commence at the end of September leading up to the APEC Leaders’ Summit in November 2018.

In a statement, Commander of NCD/Central Assistant Commissioner, Donald Yamasombi, said as part of this special security operation, he is anticipating the re-engagement of all volunteer reservists based in NCD to help increase the city’s police manpower strength.

ACP Yamasombi said the volunteers comprised of mostly affectionate and dedicated citizens from within the public and public sectors.

“They were previously known to have used their spare time to do police work outside of their normal employment,” he said.

“They helped in many aspects of police work until they were laid off when Commissioner Baki issued instructions for the discontinuation of the reservist concept some time ago.”

ACP Yamasombi added that genuine volunteers will be engaged and not those who were recruited and disbanded together with the auxiliary constables.

Yamasombi clarified that when the reservist concept was disbanded by Commissioner Baki, some exception was accorded to a number of corporate entities under special MOU arrangements due to security concerns raised by these organisations.

Yamasombi is anticipating the re-engagement of the volunteers only because they genuinely commit their spare time to do police work free-of-charge without expecting any form of payment from the Constabulary and the government.

The Commander has called on the volunteers to visit his office at the Boroko Police Station on Monday, September 10th, to register their names before the launch of this special operation, which is scheduled for September 20th.
