Maino to co-captain PNG women’s soccer team

US-based defender Lucy Maino has been selected to co-captain the PNG women’s side to the Pacific Games alongside veteran Deslyn Siniu and Sandra Birum.

“To me to be given the co-captains role alongside Deslyn and Sandra is a big achievement for me,” she said.

“I am so proud to fly my country’s flag at the Pacific Games and being given the co-captaincy role was something I never expected.

“There were few other senior players in the squad and leading the team ahead of them is challenging for me.”

The Mekeo lass said she has received a lot of support from teammates and officials.

Maino, who based in USA and plays with the UH Hilo Vulcans, says she has been in camp for the last two weeks in Port Moresby, and the spirit is high among the squad members.

“The girls are getting physical and are focused after the two weeks of intensive training.

“We all have sacrificed for this Games and our aim is to defend the gold medal and bring it back home.”

Maino believes they have the strength to fulfil that dream

“Nothing is impossible. Show us the love and we will return it.”
